SUMMARY:Impromptu Beeding Hill Walk
DESCRIPTION:Beeding Hill Triangle and Room Bottom. 6km / 4 miles\, ~3hrs \nAn exciting opportunity to join expert birder Richard Allan on a local downland walk.\n\nWe may need to limit the numbers of cars & attendees so could you please inform tonyletchford@yahoo.co.uk asap & by 22nd August if you wish to attend? \n\nPlease indicate :\n-if you will be driving & if so whether you will be carrying any passengers.\n-if you are seeking a lift from Shoreham.\n-if you are making your own way there without a car\n\nThis walk is aimed at observing some of the migrating birds which stop off on the Downs. The number of migrants is always determined by the weather meaning there could be a good sprinkling and visible passage of migrants or there could be very few!\nEven if there are few there’ll be some flowers\, butterflies and great views to keep us interested. \nGroup Size: Long stretches of footpaths are relatively narrow\, meaning walking in single file\, or no more than two abreast. A group size limited to 15 – 20 members will allow the leader and group to communicate effectively. \nThe walk starts from the Beeding Hill car park (What3words harder.cook.surprises )\, where the minor road from Mill Hill turns sharply right towards Truleigh Hill. Parking is limited to about 10 vehicles and its likely other cars will be there. Car sharing is strongly encouraged. An option is for drivers to meet in the main Mill Hill Car Park (What3words inflation.portfolio.smaller ) and then to get several people into a single car for the 1.5mile drive up to the Beeding Hill Car Park. This will be organised if necessary once attendees are known. \nFrom the car park we’ll head SW along the Monarch’s Way looking for migrants in the fields\, along the fence lines & hedgerows and perhaps passing overhead. A known hot-spot is ‘the dip’ where we may linger a short while.\nFrom ‘the dip’ we’ll head up a relatively steep section\, with everyone going at their own pace. We’ll regroup where the Monarch’s Way meets the path from Thundersbarrow Hill and turn N heading gently uphill to Truleigh Hill looking for more migrants plus possible Raven and Peregrines overhead. Yellow Wagtails are possible if there are sheep and cattle in fields or around the horse paddock.\nWhere we join the South Downs Way we’ll turn left (west) and pass the YHA (toilets and quick refreshments possible).\nJust after the YHA we’ll head N to explore the open areas and scrub of the north facing slope above Room Bottom where in the right conditions migrants such as Wheatears\, Redstarts & Spotted Flycatchers can be found.\nThe route continues west arriving back at the car park.

SUMMARY:The Adur SSSI\, a walk along the River Adur
DESCRIPTION:A walk alongside the Adur SSSI\, starting at midday from outside Ropetackle Arts Centre .\nThe start of this walk is well served by the number 2 and 700 bus routes. Free  parking and public toilets  are available at Adur recreation ground\, just across the river from Ropetackle.  \nThe walk will be circular and just over two miles and two hours in length. It’s on a flat surface\, sometimes muddy\, and can be cold even in autumn if the weather is inclement. \nTony says “this walk will appeal to beginners\, as we focus on waders and gulls in an array of confusing plumages! There will also be the option of tea/coffee at the end of the walk”.  \nPlease be aware that in order to minimise disturbance to birds\, only guide dogs or assistance dogs are permitted to attend Outdoor events.

SUMMARY:Minibus outing to Pagham Harbour
DESCRIPTION:We are planning to run our ever popular minibus outing to Pagham Harbour to coincide with autumn migration. There is always lots to see here\, and at this time of year anything could turn up. On our last minibus trip we were all thrilled to catch up with an Osprey fishing in the harbour\,  before landing to devour its lunch on a distant post! \nFacilities: Toilets are available at the visitor centre from 9AM. \nThe centre opens at 10AM. Hot drinks and snacks are available here. \nCost: £10 to cover minibus expenses. This payment is payable in advance\, preferably by bank transfer and is non-refundable. \nLunch: You will need to bring your own lunch and drinks. \nDepart from: outside the main entrance to Shoreham station at 8AM \nWhat to expect: \nWe will start our birding searching the hedgerows for migratory birds and looking out over Ferry Pool for water birds. We shall then follow the track out to Church Norton\, passing reed-lined pools\, areas of saltmarsh and fields along the way. At Church Norton we will spend time looking out towards Tern Island\, where a rising tide will hopefully push a multitude of waders and other birds towards us. We shall have a picnic lunch here\, before walking back along the track towards the visitor centre. (High tide is at 15.15). The pace will be gentle\, and the total distance will be approximately 4 miles on flat terrain. Leaders will bring scopes to help everyone get good views of any special birds. \nOur bus will be driven by Ian Gifford and  Dave Phillips will be co-leading the trip. \nHow to apply: If you would like to attend then please email me personally at chair@sdos.org or use ‘Reply to Sender’ by Wednesday 26th August. If we are over-subscribed there will be random selection of participants and you will hear one way or the other.
