Rare Sighting Of Stone Curlew At Widewater

You never know what you’re going to see with spring migration now in full flow and, this week, an eagle-eyed SDOS birder spotted none other than a Stone Curlew on the beach by Widewater.

These rare birds migrate from Africa and breed in northern Europe, with East Anglia a UK stronghold. However, these very odd looking birds last bred in Sussex in the early 1970s although thankfully, due to conservation work, their paltry numbers in this country are on the rise again.

This particularly bird spent a short amount of time resting on the beach before continuing north and was apparently spotted again outside Worthing before disappearing once again.

So keep your eyes peeled as you never know what you might find!

Thanks to Richard Fairbank for the spot and the photo.
