Alpine Swift
🔍 Overview
Rare vagrant. A large, fast-flying swift rarely seen in Sussex, Alpine Swifts are scarce spring and summer visitors, typically after strong southerly winds.
🪶 Key Identification Features
Size: Large swift (20–22 cm)
Plumage: Dark brown above with striking white belly and throat
Shape: Long, scythe-shaped wings and forked tail
Flight: Powerful, agile, often glides more than Common Swift
🗺️ Habitat & Distribution
Rare but regular migrant. Best chances during spring overshoots or autumn drift migration, especially around coastal headlands like Beachy Head or Seaford Head.
🎶 Voice & Behaviour
Screeching calls, less frequently vocal than Common Swift. Flies high and fast in small groups or solo.
📸 Birding Tip
Scan skies during strong southerly winds in April or late summer. Look for larger size and white belly compared to swifts.
