Baird’s Sandpiper

🔍 Overview

A small American shorebird, rare in the UK and even rarer in Sussex. Occasional autumn vagrant, usually found after storms.

Long wings extending past the tail

Scaled appearance on upperparts

Fine, neat streaking on breast

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Most likely to appear at coastal scrapes or mudflats such as Rye Harbour, Pagham Harbour, or Medmerry. Best time is August–October.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Quiet and unobtrusive. May mix with Dunlin or Little Stint flocks but behaves more cautiously, walking with a distinctive, smooth gait.
