Black Guillemot

🔍 Overview

Rare vagrant. A coastal auk of northern Britain, Black Guillemots are rare visitors to Sussex, most often seen in winter after storms.

🪶 Key Identification Features

Size: Medium auk (32 cm)

Winter Plumage: White with black wing patch

Summer Plumage: Striking black with white wing panel

Bill & Legs: Thin bill, red legs

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Uncommon along the Sussex coast. Have been seen off of Brighton Marina and Goring Gap.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Usually silent in Sussex. Watch for bobbing motion on the sea or fast, low flight over water.

📸 Birding Tip

Best chance after winter storms—look among other seabirds close to harbour walls or rocky outcrops.
