Black-necked Grebe

🔍 Overview

A striking small grebe, known for its golden ear tufts and jet-black breeding plumage. It is a scarce winter visitor and passage migrant in Sussex, with occasional summering birds.

Breeding: black neck and head, golden ear fans

Winter: dusky back and flanks, white cheeks

Bright red eye and upturned bill

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Most likely found at coastal lagoons and gravel pits such as Pagham Harbour, Arlington Reservoir, or Newhaven Tide Mills. Occasional spring and autumn sightings on passage; more regular in winter months.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Rarely vocal in the UK. Typically dives frequently and swims low in the water. Often solitary or in small groups, sometimes associating with Little or Great Crested Grebes.
