Black-winged Stilt

🔍 Overview

Very scarce spring migrant. An elegant wader with extremely long pink legs. Once a major rarity, it is increasingly recorded in Sussex, bred in 2014 and 2021.

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Best seen at shallow scrapes and lagoons in spring and summer—Rye Harbour, Medmerry, and Pulborough Brooks are top sites. Most sightings occur between April and June.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Sharp, yapping calls when alarmed. Often restless and alert. Feeds in shallow water, picking delicately at the surface.
