Bluethroat

🔍 Overview

A dazzling thrush-like warbler, the Bluethroat is a scarce migrant in Sussex, most often encountered during spring or autumn passage. A single bird was reported at Brooklands in 2025.

🪶 Key Identification Features

Male: bright blue throat often with white or rust-red spot

Female: plainer with pale throat and eyebrow

Rusty flanks and tail sides, which flash in flight

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Most often seen in coastal reedbeds or wet scrub at sites like Rye Harbour, Cuckmere Haven, or Seaford Head. Spring migrants peak in April, with autumn birds in September–October.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Beautiful, varied song with mimicry—sung in spring. Usually skulks in dense vegetation but may perch up briefly, especially in early morning light.
