A large, familiar goose introduced from North America. Now widespread across Sussex, especially near lakes, ponds, and parklands.

Size: Large (90–100 cm)

Plumage: Brown body, black neck and head with white chin strap

Distinctive Marks: White cheek patch

Bill: Broad and black

Tail: Short and square

Flight: Powerful, slow wingbeats


🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Common in Sussex wetlands, rivers, and park lakes.


🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Loud, honking call, especially during flight. Often seen grazing on grass.


🍴 Diet

Grasses, grains, and aquatic plants.


📸 Birding Tip

Easy to spot due to size and call. Look for V-formations during flights in spring and autumn.
