Common Buzzard

🔍 Overview

Once rare, the Common Buzzard is now Sussex’s most widespread raptor. Often seen circling high above woodland and farmland, especially in spring.

Size: Medium-large (51–57 cm)
Plumage: Variable brown with paler underparts
Distinctive Marks: Broad wings, short fan-shaped tail
Bill: Hooked
Tail: Broad, often fanned in flight
Flight: Soaring and gliding on thermals

Widespread across woodland, Downland, and farmland. Often perched on posts or circling in the sky.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Mewing call like a cat: “peee-uuu.” Often heard as it soars or displays.

🍴 Diet

Feeds on small mammals, carrion, birds, and earthworms.

Look up! Seen almost anywhere in Sussex. Try Woods Mill, Sheepcote Valley, or Cissbury.
