Common Redstart

🔍 Overview

A striking summer migrant, the Common Redstart is a woodland gem in Sussex. Males are vibrant, and the species nests in old tree holes and clearings.

Size: Small (13–14 cm)
Plumage: Males: orange chest, grey back, black face; Females duller
Distinctive Marks: Flashing red tail, white forehead in males
Bill: Thin and pointed
Tail: Constantly flicked
Flight: Flitty and upright

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Breeds in woodland edges, parkland, and heathland — especially Sheepcote Valley, Cissbury Ring and Hollingbury Hill.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Song is a sweet, descending warble with a rough finish. Calls include a “hweet.”

🍴 Diet

Insects, spiders, and berries.

📸 Birding Tip

Best seen in April–May. Look for tail flicking in sunny clearings or perched on low branches.
