“The Common Sandpiper is a passage migrant with birds visible anywhere along the river. However, the section around the old Cement Works is a reliable section and if any birds overwinter then this is the place to find them.”

🔍 Overview

A familiar passage wader in Sussex, seen by rivers, lakes, and coastal inlets. Occasionally overwinters. Very scarce in winter. Has bred at least once.

🪶 Key Identification Features

Plumage: Brown above, white below with a white “shoulder notch”

Other: Constant tail-bobbing, low flight with stiff, bowed wings

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Seen along Adur Valley and Brighton Marina especially April–May and July–September.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Sharp “weet-weet” call in flight. Skittish and restless when flushed.
