Common Tern

🔍 Overview

Nicknamed the “sea swallow,” the Common Tern is a graceful summer breeder in Sussex, nesting on shingle islands and lagoons.

Plumage: Pale grey with black cap
Distinctive Marks: Long wings, forked tail, red bill with black tip
Bill: Slim and pointed

Flight: Agile, buoyant

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Breeds at Shoreham Harbour, Worthing Beaches, and Goring Gap from April to August.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Sharp, rasping “kee-aar.” Hover-dives for fish with great precision.

🍴 Diet

Small fish, crustaceans, and insects.

Look for plunge-diving behaviour and nesting colonies on protected islands.
