Coot

🔍 Overview

Common and unmistakable, the Coot is a year-round resident of Sussex ponds, lakes, and rivers. Not as friendly as it looks!

Size: Medium (36–38 cm)
Plumage: All-black body
Distinctive Marks: White bill and forehead shield
Bill: White, short
Tail: Short and hidden
Flight: Laboured, with long running take-off

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Widespread on almost all freshwater — including Woods Mill, Adur Valley, Brooklands and village ponds.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Sharp clucks, squeaks, and barks. Very aggressive towards others when breeding.

🍴 Diet

Aquatic plants, seeds, insects, and small snails.

📸 Birding Tip

Look for territorial squabbles. Watch them dive or graze at water’s edge.
