Eurasian Wigeon

🔍 Overview

A common and elegant winter duck, the Wigeon forms large flocks on Sussex wetlands. Easily identified by its whistling call.

Size: Medium duck (45–51 cm)
Plumage: Males: pinkish breast, cream crown; Females: light brown
Distinctive Marks: Male’s yellow crown and whistling call
Bill: Short and bluish
Tail: Neat
Flight: Strong, fast-winged

Found in winter at Pulborough Brooks, Adur Valley  and Worthing Beaches.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Males give a high-pitched “wheeoo.” Often grazes in groups on flooded meadows.

🍴 Diet

Grass, aquatic vegetation, and roots.

Listen for the distinctive whistling call to locate them in winter flocks.
