Greylag Goose

🔍 Overview

The ancestor of domestic geese, the Greylag Goose is common in Sussex pastures, lakes, and coastal marshes, often in large flocks. (Native population in UK is Amber listed species of medium conservation concern).

Size: Large (74–84 cm)
Plumage: Mottled grey, pale belly
Distinctive Marks: Pinkish bill, orange legs
Bill: Broad and orange-pink
Tail: Short and square
Flight: Strong, V-formations on migration

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Lakes, reservoirs, pastures, and estuaries across Sussex, especially Pagham and Pulborough.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Loud honking calls. Grazes in fields or floats quietly on water.

🍴 Diet

Grasses, sedges, aquatic plants.

📸 Birding Tip

Flocks in morning/ evening flights—great for witnessing mass congregation.
