Gyr Falcon

An arctic falcon and one of the rarest birds likely to reach Sussex. Any sighting would generate huge interest.

Huge falcon with broad wings

Plumage variable: white, grey, or brown morphs

Heavy chest and strong bill

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Would likely be a flyover or brief visitor to open landscapes like the Downs or coastal marshes, most likely in winter.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Silent during vagrancy. Swift, powerful flight. May take large prey mid-air. Easily mistaken for a large Peregrine but bulkier and more powerful.

Status: Very Rare
