A powerful gull with dark slate-grey back, the Lesser Black-backed Gull winters along Sussex coast and inland waters. Scarce breeder.

Common in Shoreham Harbour, Brooklands, Goring Gap, Lower Adur SSSI and on inland lakes.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Harsh mewing and squawking. Bold scavenger.

🍴 Diet

Fish, refuse, earthworms, small mammals.

📸 Birding Tip

Scan mixed gull flocks—look for yellow legs and dark mantle to differentiate from Herring Gull.
