“The Lesser Whitethroat locally, is far less common than Common Whitethroat and much more elusive. Best found by learning its song and then patiently waiting for a view. Mill Hill generally has 2 – 3 pairs and the Downs Link path heading north from the A27 is another reliable location.”
🔍 Overview
A secretive summer visitor, the Lesser Whitethroat skulks in dense hedgerows and scrub. More often heard than seen in Sussex.

Size: Small (13–14 cm)
Plumage: Grey upperparts, white underparts
Distinctive Marks: Dark mask across eye
Bill: Small and pointed
Tail: Long and dark-edged
Flight: Flicking, low and quick
🗺️ Habitat & Distribution
Scrub, hedgerows, woodland edges. Best seen in May–June around Mill Hill, Hollingbury Hill, Cissbury and Sheepcote Valley.
🎶 Voice & Behaviour
Harsh rattling song followed by softer warble. Tends to stay hidden in foliage.
🍴 Diet
Insects, spiders, berries in late summer.
