Little Grebe

🔍 Overview

Also known as “Dabchick,” the Little Grebe is a small, round diving bird commonly found on Sussex ponds and lakes.

Size: Tiny (25–29 cm)
Plumage: Chestnut neck, dark back in summer; duller in winter
Distinctive Marks: Puffy shape, hidden tail
Bill: Short and pointed
Tail: Virtually absent
Flight: Rarely flies; prefers diving

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Freshwater ponds, lakes, and gravel pits—Lower Adur SSSI, Brooklands and Widewater are good spots.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Whinnying trill. Often heard more than seen, diving repeatedly.

🍴 Diet

Small fish, insects, aquatic invertebrates.

📸 Birding Tip

Look near the reed edge. Watch for ripples and disappearing blobs!
