Little Gull

The smallest gull in the world, the Little Gull is a scarce but regular passage migrant along the Sussex coast.

Size: Very small (25–29 cm)
Plumage: Pale grey back, black underwings (adult), dark smudge on head
Distinctive Marks: Short black bill, dainty build
Bill: Thin and dark
Tail: Square
Flight: Buoyant, tern-like flight

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Seen off Brighton Marina, Widewater, Worthing Beaches and over flooded fields after storms.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

High-pitched, tern-like calls. Often in flocks with Black-headed Gulls.

🍴 Diet

Insects, small fish, crustaceans.

Watch for spring or autumn gales—they often bring them in close to shore.
