Moorhen

🔍 Overview

Common in Sussex wetlands, the Moorhen is a dark, duck-sized waterbird with a red bill and a quirky personality.

Size: Medium (30–35 cm)
Plumage: Dark brown-black with white flashes
Distinctive Marks: Red bill with yellow tip
Bill: Red, triangular
Tail: Short and flicked upward
Flight: Clumsy, weak flier

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Everywhere from garden ponds to rivers and marshes—very common across Sussex. Brooklands,  Adur Valley and Woods Mill.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Loud “kurruk” and clucking. Swims with a jerky motion.

🍴 Diet

Aquatic plants, seeds, insects, snails.

📸 Birding Tip

Easiest seen at park ponds—best viewed at dawn or dusk for peaceful scenes.
