Razorbill

🔍 Overview

The Razorbill is a chunky seabird seen off Sussex in winter or during migration. Related to puffins and guillemots. Common winter visitor and fairly common passage migrant; last bred in 1878.

Size: Medium auk (37–39 cm)
Plumage: Black above, white below
Distinctive Marks: Thick black bill with white line
Bill: Stubby and deep
Tail: Pointed
Flight: Fast and direct low over water

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Offshore from Widewater, Goring Gap, Brighton Marina especially in winter storms.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Silent at sea. Breeding colonies have guttural calls.

🍴 Diet

Small fish such as sand eels and sprats.

Best seen from headlands during seabird passage—binoculars essential.
