Red-crested Pochard

🔍 Overview

Possibly a rare winter visitor and passage migrant although most records probably relate to escaped or naturalised birds. An attractive diving duck, recorded occasionally in Sussex. Can be of wild or feral origin.

🪶 Key Identification Features

Male: Bright orange head, red bill, black breast, pale flanks

Female: Dull brown with pale cheeks

Size: Larger than a Tufted Duck (53–57 cm)

🗺️ Habitat & Distribution

Found at large freshwater lakes or reservoirs like Weir Wood Reservoir, Arlington Reservoir, and Chichester Gravel Pits. Only one record flying over Shoreham in our recording area in the last 25 years.

🎶 Voice & Behaviour

Generally quiet. May associate with other diving ducks.
