Slavonian Grebe Latest Star Guest On Widewater

Widewater Lagoon continues to be a super bird magnet these days, with a Slavonian Grebe the latest unusual visitor to the very special area of brackish water.

Slavonian Grebes are not uncommon in the area but are usually seen on the sea, not on the lagoon, so this is a special visit for a bird which, after breeding in northern Europe, including some Scottish lochs, winters on the south coast.

The bird, on the left below, has been hanging out with a Little Grebe (right), Moorhens, Coots and Black Headed Gulls.

First spotted by SDOS committee member, Jenny Holter, the bird is the latest in a long line of special visitors to Widewater, including a pair of Goldeneye and a Goosander, the latter of which is still there as of November 24th, along with the celebrity Grebe!

Let’s hope the Slavonian Grebe hangs around long enough to give everyone a chance to see it!
