SDOS had the privilege of guiding 30 people around the Adur SSSI this morning, as part of Shoreham Wordfest.
The event started with a superb presentation from Richard Allan in the foyer of Ropetackle, followed by a walk of approximately 2 miles. Our ‘guests’ were thrilled to see a Kingfisher posing for about ten minutes on a well positioned rock beside the river, after which we demystified gulls (honestly) and showcased key waders such as Ringed Plover and Lapwing.
Showing non-birders a Lapwing or Redshank through a scope always elicits a ‘wow’!!! And a telescope makes such a difference in bringing a distant bird to life.
Our participation in this event was very rewarding, and made all the hard work around planning and creating a presentation very worthwhile. Many thanks to Tony Benton, Richard Allan, Sue Miles, and Sally Hawes for guiding (& Sally for photos) and to Jan B for helping with the Ropetackle end of the event.
